Popis: | In this paper I intend to prove whether Jarvis’ statement affirming that his translation of Don Quijote (The Life and Exploits of the Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de La Mancha. Translated from the Original Spanish of Miguel Cervantes de Saavedra, 1742), had been made straight from John Carteret’s Spanish Edition of Cervantes’ masterpiece (Vida y Hechos del Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de La Mancha, compuesta por Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, 1738), was true, or if he had been inspired by previous translations. To that aim, I shall employ Alberto Blecua’s method consisting in the detection and analysis of what he calls “separative errors” (1983), in order to compare Jarvis’s version to those produced by Thomas Shelton (1612) and John Philips (1687), to a summarized one by E. S. (probably Edwin Sadleir, 1689) and to those by Peter Motteaux (1700-1703) and Edward Ward (1711). |
