Popis: | The article presents an analysis of materials on the history of North American Rus’, published in the Chişinău Diocesan Bulletin in 1914. The information concerns Platon (Rozhdestvensky), Archbishop of Chişinău and Khotin in 1914–1915. Prior to that he ran the Aleutian and North American Diocese where the Russian Orthodox Church exercised canonical power over Orthodox Christians of different ethnic groups. The pages of the Chişinău Diocese official mouthpiece contained a lot of interesting information on the history of Orthodoxy in America. Much attention was given to Rusins who had emigrated to the United States and Canada from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Archbishop Platon described affectionately the Russian inhabitants of Galician Rus’ who were the majority of his congregation. The Archbishop considered it his high-priority task to help Uniats return into the fold of the Orthodox Church. Numerous missionary conferences, towns’ meetings and other outreach conducted by the Russian Mission throughout the North American territory facilitated mass conversion of Russian Galicians (Rusins) to Orthodoxy. The adoption of the New Church Statute helped organize parish life. The Russian Immigrant newspaper (1912) and The Orthodox Devotee (1913) founded by the Archbishop, played an important part in the strenghening of Orthodoxy. Established with the support of the Archbishop, the Russian Emigree Society and the Russian Emigrees’ House (1908) were able to render assistance to more than 100 000 ethnic Russian emigrees from Russia and Rusins from Galicia, Bukovina and Subcarpathian Rus’. The Archbishop’s efforts led to an increase in Orthodox parishes, thus strengthening the position of the Russian Orthodox Church in North Americ |
