In this paper we simulate how to design computer networks economically whiles maintaining efficiency. Koforidua Technical University has a functional Local Area Network (LAN); the problem however is the excessive congestion that is experienced on the network. The network houses a local server running OSIS, the school’s management software. Although the institution has invested heavily in introducing fiber cables to link the various blocks, staff as well as students finds it very difficult in accessing resource on the server as well as the internet. We looked at employing the “the one armed router” in redesigning and simulating the network using packet tracer. The results obtained from the simulation shows that implementing the one armed router in conjunction with Virtual Trunking Protocol, (VTP) effectively controls the incidence of broadcast storms by confining each broadcast to a single VLAN on the network which ends up in freeing bandwidth on the network thereby easing the problem of congestion. |
