Popis: Decreased platelet counts are known to be the most sensitive indicator of benzene exposure. The objective of this investigation was to relate the concentration of mg phenol/g-creat and the decrease of the platelet count, by exposure to benzene. A descriptive, cross-correlation and field study was carried out involving 29 service station workers and a control group of 27 workers without occupational exposure. For the platelet count, the Mindray hematology analyzer was used, while Theis-Benedict method was employed for phenol, and Jaffé modified for creatinine. Significant deference was observed in platelet and urinary phenol levels between both groups. A significant negative association was found between platelet levels and time in service in the study group. It was evidenced that as the level of urinary phenol increases in the workers' organism, platelet levels tend to decrease.
