Endometrial Hyperplasia in Asymptomatic Postmenopausal Tamoxifen-Treated Patients

Popis: OBJECTIVE: Transvaginal ultrasonographic (TVUSG) assessment of endometrial thickness and endometrial hyperplasia in asymptomatic postmenopausal breast cancer patients who received tamoxifen. METHODS: Asymptomatic postmenopausal 57 cases (> 6 months amenorrhea) who had endometrial thickness (>5 mm) in TVUSG examination in the Gynecology Clinic of Ege University between January 2004- January 2005, were included in the study. The study design was retrospective. There were no patients on hormone replacement therapy. The patients were then divided into two groups which were asymptomatic postmenopausal and asymptomatic postmenopausal breast cancer tamoxifen –treated group. RESULTS: The average age of patients were 55,6 ± 7,5 years. Hypertension was observed in 21 (63,2%) and diabetes mellitus was observed in 5 (8,8%) of the patients. Thirteen (22,8%) of the patients had breast cancer history and all of them were taking adjuvant tamoxifen therapy. Endometrial hyperplasia were seen in 4 (7,0%) of the patients and 53 cases (93,0%) had benign endometrial pathology. There were three (6.8%) endometrial hyperplasia in asymptomatic postmenopausal group and one (7.7%) in asymptomatic postmenopausal breast cancer tamoxifen –treated group. There was no significant between two groups. CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference in percent of endometrial hyperplasia between asymptomatic postmenopausal and asymptomatic postmenopausal breast cancer tamoxifen –treated group.
