Popis: Introduction: The global development and the sensory experiences starts in the intrauterine life. It is from the sensory experiences that the baby learns to relate to its body and to the world. Hospitalization breaks the child’s daily routine and may decrease his/her chances of experiencing usual sensory experiences. The routine of hospitalized children is surrounded by painful stimulus, restriction of physical space and movement, and alteration of environmental stimuli. This routine associated to the permanence in the hospital environment, can result in global commitments on development. Objective: This study aims to analyze the sensorial stimulus received by extended hospitalization children. Method: Were observed the stimulus offered to hospitalized children from 0 to 6 years old who were admitted to a pediatric ward of a tertiary hospital in Rio de Janeiro. This is a qualitative approach. The technique used was participant observation of the stimulus received by hospitalized children through an observation script. Data analysis was performed through content analysis in the thematic modality. Results: Were perceived that children receive many sensory stimuli, but they are not always pleasant and developmental. Conclusion: The participation of the companion in this process and the health professionals must be attentive to soften the unpleasant stimulus.
