Popis: Citizen participation in a diverse society requires certain common values and skills. The statements that Alexis de Tocqueville makes in Democracy in America, underline the need for citizens to overcome individualism and increase their freedom through involvement in social action. Democracy has a strong educational potential as the actions and social values which create customs revert directly in the democratic intellectual and moral atmosphere. Virtues such as benevolence, justice, sincerity and self-restraint favour the development of a democratic society and equally enrich it in a moral sense
