Popis: The study on practices and perception in nutrition and health with the aim to understand the potential for retaining or changing current practices that can improve the nutrition status of infants and young children had been carried out in Martapura, South Kalimantan, in 1996. The area has been known as an Islamic town, where the people are strongly religious. Mothers are responsible for taking care of their children, while fathers are responsible for income. Mothers with wellnourished children seemed more confident and future oriented than mothers with undernourished children. Mothers with undernourished children are more concerned about negative physical reaction (vomiting, abdominal distention) of the child to a new food than mothers with wellnourished children. Although many families seek health services from government services, there is still a strong influence of the traditional sector. This is least common in urban areas and most common in rural areas. Attendance at Posyandu sessions varies by area. Most mothers also attend religious meetings such as pengajian and Yasinan. These community meetings seems an obvious forum for delivering nutrition extension. The tuan guru or ulama is very important in delivering program messages. Fathers should also be reached to advocate certain practices in the home.
