Popis: Chronic renal failure is one of the first causes of death in the country and in the province of Las Tunas. In spite of the advances in the treatment of this disease, the quality of life of the patients is highly affected. A review paper was carried out about the neural and psycho-physiological substrata underlying meditation and mindfulness, as a complement to the treatment of terminal chronic renal failure. The knowledge of the physiological effects of meditation in the brain is still limited, but there are evidences that it affects the function of the central and autonomic nervous system, it activates the neuronal structures that involve attention and regulate emotions. Meditative practice is associated with the changes in the neuroplasticity of the anterior cingulate cortex, the insula, the temporoparietal junction, the frontolimbic neuronal region and others. These changes can work together establishing a greater self-regulation. Mindfulness provides a more adaptable emotional metacognition and better physiological indices of self-regulation that can contribute to the adaptability of the patients with terminal chronic renal failure, reducing negative states of mind and favoring the positive ones.
