Popis: | The partial life cycle of Ascocotyle nana Ransom, 1920 (Digenea: Heterophyidae), was completed experimentally in the laboratory. Metacercariae were found encysted in the cranial cavity and muscles of the cichlid fish Caquetaia kraussii (petenia) (natural infection) collected from Complejo Fluvio-Lagunar Campoma, Buena Vista, Ribero Municipality, Sucre State, Venezuela. Adult parasites were obtained experimentally in rats. Natural infection with juvenile and adult flukes was found in the Gull-billed tern Gelochelidon nilotica collected from El Peñón, Sucre State. Metacercariae and adults are redescribed and illustrated. This is the first record of this trematode in Venezuela and C. kraussii, and G. nilotica represent new hosts. |
