Popis: | Lithuanian St. Casimir Society was founded in October, 1925 and started its activities in Vilnius region much later than its affiliated organization – Lithuanian Educational Society Rytas (Morning). Although Lithuanian St. Casimir Society did not have its own school network, before its forced dissolution in 1937 it was able to strengthen the Lithuanian national consciousness through its sections. During the period of 1926–1936, the Lithuanian St. Casimir Society had 482 sections. In order to educate Lithuanians of Vilnius region more effectively, St. Casimir Society cooperated with the Lithuanian Educational Society Rytas: its sections were established in areas where at the same time the Lithuanian Education Society Rytas had its sections, schools and reading rooms. In the struggle of the Polish administrative authorities against the Lithuanian Education Society Rytas, which organized schools, sections and reading rooms, St. Casimir Society was able to operate relatively quietly: the board of its center trained qualified lecturers in Vilnius. They carried out educational work among Lithuanians in the Vilnius region: they controlled the work of all sections of St. Casimir Society, gave lectures on topics relevant to people, showed movies and taught young people new games. Members of the sections of St. Casimir Society took care of their own sections and the local people using the libraries available in each section for their self-education. |
