Walking the waterfront of Trieste, a mix of glorious historical buildings, maritime facilities, port structures and abandoned industrial brown-fields tell about different periods and episodes of the city historical and economic identity. The sea and the sea economy provide to the aging local population good quality of life, a captivating urban environment and nice opportunities to stay on the water. However, a rising tourist sector, after a decade of intervention for the reorganization of several urban areas, has to cope with a suffering industrial economy and a port which is not growing at full speed. |
