The aim of this study is to develop ceramic materials which have optimal micro structural and physical properties. Clays and dolomite were fired at different proportions for a microstructure and surface hardness study. Two different mixtures of 40% clay, 35% kaolin, 25% dolomite as well as 40% clay, 15% kaolin and 45% dolomite were prepared for this investigation. The experimental tablets were prepared by hand pressing and fired at 1150°C. Each tablet was ground for X-ray diffraction analysis. Microstructures were examined via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Improved surface hardness properties of ceramic materials were determined by the development of forsterite (Mg2SiO4) in microstructure. This study is a part of the master thesis which title was "The effect of pseudowollastonite on the mechanical and chemical resistance of ceramic products". |
