Popis: | The study compares the demographic transitions (fertility and mortality) in France and in Nigeria, and their long term consequences for population growth and population size. The two countries appear at both ends of the range of situations in demographic transitions : France with an early and slow decline in mortality and fertility, outstanding even by European standards, Nigeria with a late and rapid decline in mortality along with a late and slow fertility decline, outstanding even by African standards. As a result, the population of Nigeria was multiplied by 14 since 1900, whereas that of France only increased by 61%. The population density by area of agricultural land already exceeds that of France, and is likely to be multiplied by a factor of 4 in the 21st century if population growth continues along the same trend. The paper discusses the determinants of fertility and mortality changes and their expected demographic consequences in the long run. |
