Three-dimensional mapping of the mechanical properties of epithelial monolayers

Popis: Epithelial tissues are present throughout the body, covering surfaces and creating hollow organs. The mechanical properties of cells forming these tissues are key to understand the shape they adopt. Magnitudes such as pressure and tension govern these dynamical processes, and yet measuring them in a non invasive manner is challenging. This project develops a set of computational and mathematical tools to infer such magnitudes from non invasive measurements such as cell shape and Traction Force Microscopy. The results of the technique give evidence of its viability, being able to estimate pressures and tensions precisely in computer-generated data. Applying the procedure to real experiments, deeper insights on epithelial tissue can be obtained and phenomena tightly related to the mechanics and shape of epithelia such as morphogenesis or metastasis can be better understood.
