Systems toxicology relies on data integration from a variety of disciplines. These include the toxicological phenotype and in vitro assay data, together with a system-wide response such as transcriptomics data. To facilitate this, databases to capture a variety of phenotypic data, along with so-called 'omics data and metadata describing the experimental design and execution are needed. In this chapter, an overview is provided of two data infrastructures for systems toxicology data: the Chemical Effects in Biological Systems (CEBS) database from the Division of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) at the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS); and DIAMONDS, the infrastructure developed by The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), jointly with the Netherlands Toxicogenomics Center. The structure of each of these toxicoinformatics databases is explained in detail. Secondly, screenshot examples showing the setup and practical navigation through these databases are shown. Finally, the use of these databases towards integrative systems toxicology analysis is demonstrated. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. |
