Popis: Groundwater monitoring wells (piezometers) were installed on 44 sites in the Biđ field (eastern Croatia). The research was conducted in the area of 6600 ha of mainly agricultural land. The goal of the study was to identify spatial and temporal variation of nitrate concentration in the shallow groundwater aquifer. For this purpose statistical indicators and also Geographic Information System (GIS) tools were used. Groundwater samples were taken during 4-year period, every 2 months, from four meters depth and analyzed for nitrate concentration. The research has shown three major sources of pollution which can be linked with the point sources of pollution. Nitrate concentration was in range from 0.00 to 47.97 mg l-1 NO3 depending on the location of piezometers. On twelve locations concentrations were exceeding 10 mg l-1 NO3 at least once. These concentrations can be linked with the intensive agricultural production, but the pollution was larger near the point sources of pollution. The results have shown a large spatial variability and potential threat of nitrate pollution to shallow aquifer.
