| Popis: | The Klægbanken reserve in Ringkøbing Fjord – History and changes in area and vegetation with comments on the faunaKlægbanken is a narrow chain of islands in the brackish lagoon Ringkøbing Fjord in western Denmark, emerging in the late 1800s as a low, muddy bar. Partly aided by Man, the bar was slowly colonized by wetland plants. It is an important reserve for breeding birds and the high density of these influence the de-velopment and composition of the vegetation. We studied chan-ges in area and vegetation based on literature, aerial photos and direct observation.Since 1931, Ringkøbing Fjord has been cut off from the North Sea by a lock at Hvide Sande, permitting the water level to be regulated. Until 1987, the water level has been kept low, but since then more North Sea water has been led into the lagoon in order to control eutrophication, resulting in higher salinity and more frequent flooding. We demonstrate an 11 % loss in area of Klægbanken since 1987 due to erosion of the most wave-exposed western shores of the islands. The erosion is partly aided by physical wear on vegeta-tion from resting birds, partly from the withering effect of bird droppings on the plants (Fig. 2, 3, 4 and 5).Changes in breeding bird composition and salinity of floodwater have had profound effects on the composition of the vegetation (Table 1). In addition, an attempt to control the growth of reeds by mowing and burning in order to facilitate the breeding of waders has influenced diversity and competition among plants.A short section on the occurrence of mammals and other fauna is included. Periodically, Klægbanken harbours dense populations of the water vole, attracting many raptors during winter.Keywords: Nature reserve; erosion; flooding; salinity; vegetation succession; plant competition; gull colonies; mammals. |
