Popis: Secondary growth by successive cambia is a rather rare phenomenon in woody plant species. Only a few number of plants, out of different phylogenetic clades, have secondary growth by more than one vascular cambium. In most cases, these successive cambia are organised concentrically. However, in the mangrove genus Avicennia the successive cambia seem to be of a more complex nature. This study aims (i) to make a three-dimensional description and an ecological interpretation of the hydraulic architecture of Avicennia, creating herewith more insight in the development and ecological implications of successive cambia and (ii) to get more insight in the ecological distribution of plant species with successive cambia. Here for, (i) CT-scan and microCT-scan images were made for wood samples of different Avicennia species coming from the wood collection of the Royal Museum of Central Africa and (ii) the group of species with successive cambia mentioned in the Inside Wood Database were analysed. We can conclude that Avicennia has a complex network of non-circular wood patches from which the characteristics change with ecological conditions. The spatial organisation as well as the growth type of Avicennia wood could provide advantages in the ecological stressful conditions the mangrove genus is growing in. Furthermore we can observe that most of the woody plant species with successive cambia that are not lianas occur in either dry either salty environments strengthening the idea that successive cambia provide the necessary advantages for survival in harsh environmental conditions.
