| Popis: | La presente tesis pretende abordar el proceso de ascenso social experimentado por la familia Cardona y Borja que, perteneciente a la élite valenciana, se convirtieron en marqueses de Castellnovo a mediados del siglo XVII. Partimos de la idea de que todo encumbramiento debe ser explicado desde la conjunción de factores de diversa índole y, por ello, nos adentramos en los principales personajes del linaje desde una perspectiva biográfica y microanálitica con el objeto de profundizar en los pormenores que hicieron posible su progresión, tanto en el escenario político-social como en el terreno económico y cultural. Siguiendo esta línea, prestamos una investigación dividida en cinco partes, en cada una de las cuales cobran protagonismo las diferentes generaciones de la estirpe, así como las diversas problemáticas históricas en las que desplegaron sus trayectorias y que, por ende, las condicionaron. En este sentido, son tres los contextos de carácter excepcional a la luz de los cuales será examinado el progreso social de la Casa: la expulsión de los moriscos, la crisis de la Monarquía Hispánica de 1640 y la Guerra de Sucesión. Este marco nos permite trascender del individuo al problema histórico general, al tiempo que descubrir no sólo la importancia de la acción del sujeto en concordancia o tensión con el grupo, sino también la centralidad de las oportunidades ofrecidas por el medio y, en particular, en los momentos en que se ejercieron cargos políticos de primer orden. Sin embargo, nuestra incursión en la historia familiar no se agota en los cursus honorum políticos de sus miembros, sino que se extiende hacia las estrategias matrimoniales y patrimoniales, la gestión del señorío y el endeudamiento nobiliario, la conflictividad intrafamiliar, la construcción de redes de parentesco y clientelares, la importancia de situarse en el escenario cortesano, la relevancia de la contribución femenina en el mismo proceso de encumbramiento, la dedicación a las letras y la trascendencia de la apuesta austracista, entre otros temas. Con todo, un estudio que nos permite inmiscuirnos de lleno en el proceso ascensional desde sus múltiples vertientes y aportar nueva luz no solo acerca del funcionamiento del sistema social sino también sobre algunos de las principales dificultades y contextos que convulsionaron la Monarquía Hispánica para la cronología estudiada. This thesis aims to address the process of social ascent experienced by the Cardona y Borja family who, belonging to the Valencian elite, became marquises of Castellnovo in the mid-17th century. Convinced that all social rise process must be explained by the combination of different factors, we will examine the main characters of the lineage from a biographical and micro-analytical perspective, with the aim of delving into the details that made their progression possible, both in the political-social scenario and in the economic and cultural fields. Following this line of research, we present an investigation divided into five parts. In each one of them, the different generations of the lineage take center stage, as well as the different historical problems in which their trajectories unfolded and, therefore, conditioned them. In this sense, there are three contexts in the light of which the social progress of the House will be examined: the expulsion of the moriscos, the crisis of the Hispanic Monarchy in 1640 and the War of the Spanish Succession. This framework allows us to transcend from the subject to the general historical problem, while discovering not only the importance of the individual's agency - either in accord or in tension with the group - but also the centrality of the opportunities offered by the context and, particulary, at times when our protagonists held leading political positions. However, our incursion into family history is not limited to the political cursus honorum of its members, rather it extends its focus of attention to the marriage and patrimonial strategies, the management of the estate and nobiliary indebtedness, the intra-family conflict, the construction of kinship and clientelistic networks, the importance of positioning oneself in the royal court, the relevance of the female contribution to the process of social climbing, the dedication to literature, and the transcendence of taking a stand in favor of the Austracist cause, among other issues. All in all, it is a study that allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the ascensional process from its multiple dimensions, as well as to shed new light both on the functioning of the social system and on some of the main difficulties and contexts that convulsed the Hispanic Monarchy during the chronology studied. |
