We report on an empirical study of Biodiversity Galiano, a citizen science initiative in British Columbia, Canada. Our study follows the community's internal activities and development, as well as their engagement with an extended network of communities and infrastructures through their production of biodiversity data. We describe how the instigator of the central project has assembled a communal digital infrastructure, its uses and limitations, and the ongoing costs associated with it. We then trace the movement of biodiversity data between communities and technologies, and reflect on different approaches to handling incompatible and disagreeing data throughout the case. Finally, we introduce two prompts for discussion that connect our case to the workshop's themes. |
