Popis: | Press constructions on women achieving leadership positions have been widely analysed in the past by researchers as another barrier women need to overcome in order to achieve such positions. Gender bias in the media is considered to support and maintain stereotypes that do not match with the image of a leader. This paper analyses recent newspaper articles (from 2013 to 2020) of female and male CEO appointments to discern whether the gender bias in the media in Europe persists by comparing the results of the analysis of both groups. Furthermore, the present study also analyses a potential change in the way articles cover these events for female leaders over time, using the same sample of articles of women appointments and comparing the periods 2013-2016 and 2017-2020. Finally, the paper also aims to understand the perceived impact of media coverage by potential female leaders on their own aspirations. Results indicate that a gender bias still persists for some indicators such as adding personal information in female articles and identifying individuals as a group by their gender. The outcomes of the study also show a positive change, between the periods considered. In the latter period articles more often include professional related information, while the inclusion of personal and family related information remains unchanged. The paper finally shows that the way media covers these events is perceived as helping maintain the gender stereotypes by potential female leaaders. They also generally believe that a change in language would support the equal access of women and men to leadership positions |
