Popis: The provision of ecosystem services – the benefits people obtain from ecosystems – is strongly dependent on the capacity of natural processes and ecosystem functioning. The Tisza River Basin in Hungary and Romania is increasingly impacted by floods and droughts. In order to adapt to their effects and to sustain human well-being an integrated ecosystem service based approach is applied. To achieve this, a framework is developed focusing on the performance of ecosystem services and the factors that change it. The objective is to define the role of ecosystems services and their importance in two different cases of the Tisza River Basin by assessing them in the context of land and water management, policy options and weather extremes. As a conclusion it can be stated that in the current water management system, ecosystem services have a decreased performance, especially the regulating services. The decrease is not only the effect of the human activity but also of the services’ ignorance in planning and the consequence of wetland drainage and cutting river arms. The water and land management initiatives – in particular in Hungary – aim to capitalize on the potential of ecosystems to regulate floods and droughts. The analysis also highlights the importance of an integrated, transboundary ecosystem services assessment for decision making and planning.
