| Popis: | This paper studies the running of the Notary’s Office at the City Council of Cuzco in Peru, from its foundation in 1534 until the end of the 17th century. It centres on the figure of the notary and his relationship with the other members who comprise the office. For this study, we have used documents issued by the City Council of Cuzco and documents received by the Council from other institutions, which are housed in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville. We have also studied two books of the minutes of proceedings of the Council. These documents have permitted us to analyse the various systems of promotion to the post of notary, what the duties of the notary were, and how the office was organised, with its system of hierarchies and the distribution of work. |
