With the increase in population, there is a growing pressure on coastal areas, which at the same time have a high ecological, economic, social and cultural value. One of the major problems that directly affects coastal ecosystems is the discharge of sewage waste and rainwater into the marine ecosystem. Such waters have a high share of pathogenic microorganisms that increase the possibility of spreading infections and diseases in humans and animals. In order to assess the anthropogenic pressure on the western coast of Istria and the potential risk to human health, the structure of the microbial community was analyzed and the sanitary quality of the sea was determined in four port facilities – Medulin, Pula, Rovinj and Poreč.
