Popis: This work aims to consider developments in presenting cannibalism practices of the indigenous Indian peoples in Brazilian literature. It is important to indicate that antropophagy in Brazilian literature is not only present as a motive within the context of describing Indian customs (often aiming to justify colonialism). In the recent history of Brazilian literature cannibalism has had an important role of metaphor and symbol in interpreting, reevaluation and reconsideration of national literature and culture in general. In this manner the essence and nature of Brazilian cultural identity have been reformulated. Therefore, antropophagy should hold an important place in reviewing that literature since its early beginnings up to date.
