Hubs emerge as a consequence of the need to organise the realisation of societal goals and enable multiple value creation in a cooperative manner. Hubs evolve over time into value creating networking forms of organising, contributing to local and regional developments, associated with a transition to sustainable development. In this article we focus on the question what position hubs occupy within the organisational landscape. Hubs can be characterized as thick networks that take shape according to the specific demands and conditions in the area in which they operate, leading to a different constellation of participants in every hub. In order to enable the identification of hubs we elaborate seven properties that set hubs apart from other networking forms of organising: (i) Operating in a local or regional setting; (ii) addressing wicked problems; (iii) leading to a broad configuration of constituents; (iv) engaging in multiple value creating activities; (v) shaped organizationally in a unconventional way; (vi) issue related approach; (vii) leading to a transition over time. We exemplify these properties by discussing similarities and differences between three existing hubs. We acknowledge that some of the organisational challenges that hubs face need to be explored further in order to better understand organisational configurations that aim at a sustainable future. 01 januari 2017 10 p.
