This article develops and simulates a hybrid energy system to supply electricity to a rural area where there is limited electricity distribution network. The population under study is the former AETCR Filipinas in the municipality of Arauquita, Colombia. The supply of electricity in this settlement has frequent interruptions and considerable voltage fluctuations, reducing the user’s reliability and comfort. As a consequence, a hybrid system integrated by photovoltaic modules and biomass genset is proposed. The main advantage of hybrid systems is that they provide energy independence by reducing the previously mentioned problems and make use of the existing renewable resources on the territory of the installation for energy generation purposes.
