This article discusses the term Bildung, within the contexts of literary and cultural studies. It demonstrates that the concept of Bildung is grounded in the premise of a false universality of culture and cultivation; it presupposes a certain line of development of subjectivity and culture that is ubiquitous and therefore to be repeated anywhere. Finally, it argues that despite this false universality, the concept of Bildung is still essential in understanding social and cultural development. |
