Popis: The insights gained into the contentious evolutionary history of the venom system of toxicoferan reptiles (Serpentes [snakes] plus Anguimorpha [anguimorph lizards] and Iguania [iguanian lizards]) in recent years have generated considerable controversy regarding the accepted definition of "venom" and what constitutes a venomous animal. Although this may seem little more than a semantic debate, it is of crucial importance that toxinological researchers apply consistent terminology in order to avoid confusion and to facilitate the efficient formulation of research questions into the evolution, ecology, and medical application of venom and its constituent toxins.
