Aim. Hyperbaric treatment is achieved when local injury or infections impair the nutrient and oxygen supply to tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on cutaneous microflow in healthy volunteers using a laser-Doppler flowmeter before and after a single HBO exposure. Methods. Eighteen volunteers were enrolled in the study. Microflow values were recorded for 15 min breathing environmental air at a temperature of 25-28°C and a pressure of 1 ATA (T0), then at the same temperature and at a pressure of 2.8 ATA (T1) and finally 90 min after decompression, breathing air another time at 1 ATA (T2). Results. The results show a 65% reduction of the cutaneous blood flow at T1 phase in relation to T0 phase, reduction lasting until the T2 phase. Conclusion. Our study show that HBO induces a reduction of cutaneous microcirculation in healthy subjects that can be explained by a physiological defence mechanism of healthy skin against oxydative damage. |
