© WCTE 2018 Committee. Concrete and steel are the predominant building materials in non-residential and multi-storey residential building construction. However, with the advances in engineered wood products and environmental benefits of using timber in construction, there is an increased interest of using timber in non-residential and multi-storey residential projects in the last few years. This paper presents detailed case studies of two recently constructed buildings and investigates how the choice of building material in non-residential and multi-storey residential building construction affects the environmental burdens such as embodied energy, operational energy consumption and associated carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, which in turn can have an influence on the decision-making process for the choice of the building materials. |
