An empirical study with Peruvian small, medium businesses in health and hotel industries aiming of developing incremental innovative products and services explored insights, ideas generation, so-lutions validation and prototyping at the front-end open innovation strategy. Both the indirect re-search of trends, customer journey mapping, ethnography and the direct interaction with users with depth interviews and dynamic sessions group generated value creation. The research used metrics related to the number, quality and originality of the ideas, time and resources employed, the incremental or radical nature of innovation. The innovation based on external sources lead businesses to seek the necessary capabilities for knowledge management search strategies and pro-cesses. Small businesses can develop services design according to their human and financial limita-tions using knowledge management process based on four axes; scanning the environment, obser-vation, depth interviews, lean and design thinking. There are alternative paths that take into account and involve greater collaboration of users that small businesses can explore and exploit in a process that is aimed at the end user. The case study concludes that incremental innovation processes do not have to be uncertain or expensive for small and medium enterprises.
