Urban traffic noise can be a major issue for people and (local) governments. On a local scale the use of measurements is increasing, especially when measures or changes to the local infrastructure are proposed. However, measuring (only) urban traffic noise is a challenging task. By using a model based monitoring system, consisting of a scalable sensor network and an engineering model, a better understanding of the actual noise situation can be obtained. A better understanding is needed to take appropriate and cost efficient measures and to have an instrument for communication and policy making. Besides, it helps to explain differences between measurement and model results. Results of a field test of two weeks in an urban area of 400 by 200 meters are presented. The noise level measurements on the road side are compared to the engineering model results. For the model results measurements of the traffic flow were used. With the use of the actual source levels from the measurements, the sound levels in a quiet street and a quiet courtyard are calculated. Next, the calculated amount of shielding is compared to the measured results. The differences found will be used to enhance the engineering model. |
