Popis: | The ancient landscape Cilicia is part of Turkey today. As a Roman province it included the Mediterranean region from Alanya in the west to the Amanus Mountains in the east. Upcountry it was bounded by the Taurus. The most important land route connecting Anatolia and Syria has led through Cilicia since earliest times. In the Middle Ages Cilicia became an Armenian kingdom, conquered by the Mamluks of Cairo in the 14th century. The succeeding rulers were the Ramazanoğlu, a Turkmen dynasty, recognized by the Mamluks. After the Ottoman conquest of the Mamluk Empire in 1516/17 the ancient road was gradually equipped with caravanserais. The presentation will introduce a selection from these very various structures. An analysis will be made to determine 'typical' Ottoman features and local architectural elements, respectively Syrian influence. As a result it is aspired to understand better how a process of combining trans-regional traditions led to architectural invention. |
