Communication is important for children’s verbal development. The speaking language is our main communication, but we also use our body language when talking to other people. For some people our body language is the most important language and that’s why we need certain tools to make it easier for everyone to communicate with each other. In Sweden we have Swedish Sign Language and a communication tool called TAKK translated to English as Sign as Option and Complimentary Communication and are often used as a tool in preschools for children with delayed language development. This study is a qualitative research study based on an observation in a preschool. The focus on the study is to find out how teachers in the preschool use TAKK, what main difficulties they may have, working with it and also who’s it’s used for. I used Observation as a method for this study. I visited the preschool for a week, one hour a day and during different situations of the day to be able to see every aspect and different situations. Both planned and unplanned. The result of this study was that I could see that TAKK was used in many different situations of the day and with all children. Teachers used it in planned gatherings and in spontaneous situations. They were new to the approach and that was clear in the way they used the communication tools, but they were also firm and consistent in their work and therefore developed their knowledge quicker. |
