This Master's thesis presents the methods of identification of asbestos carriers in industrial and construction waste. The theoretical part of the paper describes the use of asbestos in industry and construction, from the beginning to the ban on the sale of asbestos-containing products, health risks and legal frameworks for the management of such waste. Since waste management has not always been adequate and in line with today's knowledge, brief overview of research methods for potentially contaminated sites was shown. In the practical part, three samples of construction waste from industrial plants are analyzed, one from Vranjica, and two from Lipik, to determine whether they contain asbestos. The analyzes were performed in cooperation with the Metris Research Center, which is an accredited laboratory for metal and materials analysis in Pula. The methods used to determine asbestos fibers were scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM with EDS) analysis and the Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopic method (FT-IR) analysis of the chemical composition. The presence of asbestos was reliably determined in the sample from Vranjica using the above methods. |
