Ship's diesel engines are tested on the test bed upon assembly in the engine factory where propeller loading is simulated with a turbine pumping water. Comparability of this "artificial" environment with the real conditions during the navigation is discussed herein. As a part of the engine approval, the strain gage measurements have been performed in the bedplate (oil sump) of a 13530 kW diesel engine. The main question pinpointed herein is does the test bed simulate comparable conditions with the ones during the navigation. If some parts of the engine that are axially loaded by the propeller are not observed, the test bed measurements are showing realistic results comparable with the measurements during the navigation. It can be concluded that obtained results on the test bed are reflecting real conditions during the navigation. |
