Popis: The chemical interaction between coated and uncoated B fibers and Ti or TA6V [12743-70-3] was studied at 700-1000°. When B fibers were heated in a Ti matrix, diffusion occurring at the fiber-matrix interface caused a widening interaction zone. For the uncoated fibers, the interaction zone consisted of a nonstoichiometric TiB2 layer surrounded on 1 side by TiB needles and on the other side by a Ti-B solid solution For B4C- or SiC-coated fibers and a Ti matrix, the interaction zone was more complex. The coatings acted as a diffusion barrier. The addition of alloying elements such as V and Al to Ti decreased the rate of fiber-matrix chem. interaction.
