Popis: | Humans have a long tradition of using certain plants to achieve an altered state of mind. Sacred plants are widespread cultural phenomena, and rituals throughout the world are based on their psychoactive effect. Hereby described psychoactive plants are grouped according to their dominant chemical composition and mechanisms of action. Classic hallucinogens, like peyote and ayahuasca, might have a therapeutic potential. Deep mystical experiences they seem to cause are linked with user’s greater sense of wellbeing. Cannabinoids are both precious medicines and most abused drug worldwide. Deliriants and atypical hallucinogens are nowadays mainly used by adolescents. Anticholinergic delirium, Salvia and opium smoking are proven to have long lasting or even lethal consequences. Other group of plants acts on nervous system by causing stimulating effects. Species like areca, coffee and tobacco are a source of highly addictive substances that are used on daily bases. Psychoactive plants can cause harm to human organism and lead to addiction in some cases. Despite the pending danger, described plant species are deeply rooted in human culture and as such, are widely available. |
