Popis: Tn two experiments a comparison is made between locruization performance in a typi. cal living room with reflecting walls, and in a simulation of this room using headphones. In Ihe first experiment a subject was seated in the centre of two concentric circular arrays of eight loudspeakers and had to localize sounds for both direction and distance. Eleven different stimuli were used, Results show that broadband signals could be localized very well. Sinusoids with at least one abrupt transition were localized reasonably well, whereas steady-state sinusoids were localized poorly. In the second experiment, transfer functions from loudspeaker to ear were measured for the various loudspeaker positions, as well as impulse responses in the room. These were used in a system in which the .room was eieclronically simulated. Localization measurements were repeated, except that now the stimuli were played through headphones. Comparing results of the two experiments shows that, on the whole, localization performance in the simulated room is somewhat less than in the real room, due to limitations in the hardware. However. tendencies for the different stimuli are the same.
