Mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) of waste is a process of treating municipal solid waste in such a way which, along with optimal environmental and economic objectives, minimizes the harmfulness of waste that has to be landfilled. In order to successfully design a landfill, it is necessary to know the mechanical parameters of MBT waste. Stiffness is an important mechanical parameter of MBT waste and knowing its stiffness properties allows us to estimate the amount of the settlement of a landfill body. Stiffness is usually examined in an oedometer device, while results are presented in an oedometric diagram. The paper presents an experiment in which the stiffness of mechanically-biologically treated (biodryed) municipal solid waste is measured on a non-standard oedometric device with a sample which is 15 cm in diameter.
