Radiofrequency identification was applied to track differently shaped pebbles (disks and spheres) on the Barjoška beach (Vis Island) in order to determine the relation between pebble shape and pebble transport. Pebbles were tracked after periods of 6 h, 24 h, 48 h and 3 months. The first differences between disks and spheres were observed after 24 h. In general, disks moved less and mostly in the cross-shore direction (E -W), and they were buried more easily. Spherical grains experienced mostly longshore transport (N – S). After the period of three months, a lot of pebbles (both disks and spheres) were found on the southern part of the beach and mostly burried. It is assumed that waves caused by strong sirocco wind during April and May might have caused such pebble accumulation. |
