Epidemiological Aspect of Childhood Diabetes in Okinawa

Popis: Survey of childhood diabetes was carried out in Okinawa, sending the enquet to the medical facilities, elementary schools, junior and senior high schools in June, 1978. Fortysix childhood diabetes (male 13, female 33) whose age of onet were before 15 years of age have been collected. Thirty-eight of 46 cases were insulin dependent and only 8 cases were insulin independent. Thirty cases (male 8, female 22) were under 15 years of age at the time of survey, and overall incidence was 0.97 (male 0.51, female 1.44) per 10,000 childhood population. Incidence of childhood diabetes in school pupils( 6 to under 15 years of age) was 1.48 (male 0.72, female 2.25) per 10,000 childhood population and increased as age advancing. The sex ratio of male vs. female in Okinawa was 1:3.2, indicating、significantly higher rate in female than in male (6 to under 15 years of age), and the rate of female childhood diabetes in Okinawa was higher than the reported series in mainland Japan. Duration of diabetes in two third of all cases were within 3 years. All 4 cases whose duration of diabetes had been more than ten years have some complications. Two of them were nearly blind.
