On the Margins of the State: Breakthroughs and Challenges in the Institutionalisation of NGO-driven Organic Agriculture in Uganda

| Popis: | This article stems from a broader research objective to understand factors that led to the development of organic agriculture in Uganda. It accounts for successes of the National Organic Agricultural Movement of Uganda (NOGAMU) in growing its reputation, gaining international recognition, increasing sales in the local and export markets, setting up of a local certification body (UgoCert), and NOGAMU’s ability to bring the state to the negotiation table over an organic agricultural policy for Uganda. On the other hand, this article will discuss certain challenges such as issues of sustainability, the delay in the enactment of the policy, and state experimentation with DDT to fight malaria, among others. |
