The work focuses on the study of the writings of the semi-literate in Fiume between 1915 and 1945. The corpus of documents was collected in the State Archive of Rijeka (Državni arhiv u Rijeci) in the A8 series of the 'Questura di Fiume – Riječka kvestura’ containing the files of persons considered dangerous to state security. The files, in addition to including documents of various kinds, contain letters produced by the same holders of files and addressed to the authorities, as well as private letters and postcards. Within the material were selected documents potentially produced by semi-literate authors, i.e. those who do not have a full command of the written language. The objective of the paper is to describe the corpus of documents and the most salient linguistic characteristics in reference to 'italiano popolare'. The analysis also deals with the identification and description of linguistic traits considered specific to the geographical area of Fiume, characterized by the presence of the fiuman dialect (a Venetian dialect), inserted within a context of plurilinguism, dominated mostly by the Italian and the Croatian languages. To provide a complete overview of the corpus, it was considered necessary to analyze the texts also from a thematic point of view, contextualizing the subjects in the context of the historical dynamics of the examined time. Moreover, given the complexity of the linguistic and cultural situation of Fiume, resulted from the intricate political developments that concern it, a summary has been provided of the historical and cultural events that have marked it profoundly over the last centuries. |
