Citation Trends in Professional and Learner Research Writing Effective citation practices in research writing are an essential component of academic success which not only shows writer’s competence but also helps to present writer’s knowledge on the subject matter. The aim of this study is to identify the tendencies of rhetorical citation functions and citation types in professional and learner research writing. The corpus for the study is compiled from learner theses and professional research articles written in English. For the learner sub-corpora, ten low- and ten high-graded bachelors’ theses in the field of English linguistics, written by Vilnius university undergraduates, were chosen. For the professional sub-corpus, ten research articles in the field of general English linguistics were selected. The findings reveal the differences between the citation practices among professionals and learners. The non-integral citation category was found to be the most frequently used by all three groups of writers. Regarding the usage of rhetorical citation functions, undergraduates attribute information only to show their knowledge of the field, whereas professional writers employ more complex citation practices. |
