Popis: Toothpaste scientifically better known as “dentifrice,” is inextricably linked to toothbrushing. But what does it contribute to? Accumulation of dental plaque is the primary cause of the two most common diseases in the oral cavity which is caries and periodontal disease. Daily plaque removal helps to maintain oral health. Toothpaste ingredients may provide additional benefits. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate various aspects of modern toothpastes in relation to toothbrushing to prevent plaque and gingivitis. It evaluates various aspects of the clinical benefit of toothpastes. The research design involved a randomized controlled clinical trial as well as systematic reviews and a meta-review of the literature. At first the contribution of toothpaste to plaque reduction was evaluated. Clinical parameters of plaque, gingivitis and periodontal inflammation were included. Efficacy related to mechanical plaque removal was assessed which showed that toothpaste does not seem to contribute to this. Adding baking soda as an ingredient may improve this aspect. For plaque regrowth inhibition a small but significant effect was established. Active ingredients contribute to this. The clinical trial which evaluated herbal ingredients however failed to observe any beneficial effect. One review evaluated the effect of ‘whitening’ toothpastes and showed that these may reduce extrinsic tooth discoloration. Altogether this thesis makes a strong case that toothpastes provide an adjunctive effect to toothbrushing, not only with the well-established anti-caries effect of fluoridated toothpaste but also with anti-gingivitis properties which promote oral health.
