Popis: International audience; Archaeological discoveries, by providing irrefutable proofs of the existence of an artefact in a given period, may challenge the interpretation of some texts. Conversely, texts are expected to express what is not ‘said’ by artefacts. This paper intends to explain the functioning of the Zenghou Yi’s bells chime (B.C. 433, unearthed in 1978) by re-interpreting both the poems of Shijing and the Sepu matrix. The Sepu Matrix, a diagram written by Xiong Penglai at the time of the Mongol invasion in the Yuan Dynasty, 13th century A.D., was aimed at preserving and perpetuating the secrets of ancient times but, unfortunately, was misunderstood afterwards. The first texts (poems of Shijing) are related to the organization of Chinese music into three groups while the Sepu matrix is related to the correspondence between these three groups. The correspondence is based on the pentatonic ‘se’ zither of ancient times, and the lülü (twice six-tones) system which is connected with the heptatonic system. The conclusions offered here bring to the fore the high level of ancient Chinese music.
