The paper presents the historical situation in Tarnów in 1968 and the demonstrators' actions against the police forces (civic militia) on march 20th and 21st 1968. Tarnów's workers and pupils were a part of the nationwide protest, but simultaneously they created a separate type of this protest. - They were demonstrating not together with the university students, but in order to support them, as they were acting under their influence. The demonstrations met with a very harsh reaction of the authorities and they were brutally pacified by the police. 116 people were arrested. There were 15 court trials at the district court in Tarnów and - as a result - 20 people were convicted. 16 people were sentenced to prison or fined by the magistrate's court (Kolegium Karno-Administracyjne). In spite of the repercussions, in august 1968 new leaflets were distributed in Tarnów. They were encouraging the citizens to demonstrate against the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw pact army. They were written by the same worker who had instigated the demonstrations in march. Secret service (SB) agents had been looking for him since that time. He was finally arrested and brought to trial in October 1969. This paper reconstructs the above-mentioned facts, and it is based on documents found in the institute of national remembrance (IPN), state archive in Cracow (also in Tarnow branch) and some witnesses' accounts. |
